MSV Insurance Agency

History

When the Medical Society of Virginia established its Insurance Agency in 1999, the MSV board and staff believed the new venture would provide a valuable service to member physicians. No one could foresee the phenomenal growth the MSV Insurance Agency would experience.  The MSVIA now referred to as The Medical Society of Virginia Insurance Agency (MSVIA) completed it’s 11th full year of operation on Sept. 30, 2010.    Its commitment to providing physicians with quality customer service remains as strong today as it was when the doors opened nine years ago.

The Life and Health Division portion of the Agency was formed first bringing the management of  health insurance plans in-house not only to offer better service to the members, but also to provide additional non-dues revenue for the MSV.  Thus, in 1999, the MSV Board voted to establish a fully functional subsidiary corporation and MSVIA was born.  The Property & Casualty Division was added in 2000.

The extent of MSVIA’s growth is obvious in the size of its staff which now totals over 20 professionals with solid experience in the insurance industry.   Committed to serving all physicians, MSVIA provides more than just a policy to its customers. MSVIA works with both individual physicians and physician groups to provide guidance to physicians, answer their questions and find the products that best meet their needs.

In addition to providing physicians with guidance in making crucial insurance decisions, MSVIA’s profits also support the ongoing efforts of the MSV to improve the health care environment in Virginia for patients and the physicians who treat them.   "The phenomenal growth of the MSVIA has been quite beneficial for the financial health of MSV," said Richard M. Hamrick, III, MD, MBA, current president of the MSVIA Board of Directors. "The profits earned by MSVIA are returned to the Medical Society. Those profits have helped fund a number of programs, including MSV’s new state-of-the-art headquarters, and will help ensure that initiatives on behalf of our patients and our members can be enhanced and expanded."

Despite the success of the past ten years, members of the MSVIA staff and MSVIA Board Members are looking to the years ahead to accomplish even greater growth.  "In providing service to physicians for health and malpractice, the MSVIA acts as one of the major interfaces between the MSV and many of the doctors of Virginia. This creates a sense of member intimacy with the MSV that means far more than just a professional organization," Dr. Hensle said.
