AMA joins forces with AARP and MOAA to urge Senate action on Medicare pay cuts

27 January 2010

On January 21, the AMA joined with the AARP and Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) to call on Congress to permanently repeal the current Medicare physician payment formula, and replace it with one that reflects the cost of providing care to Medicare and TRICARE patients. Leaders urged the Senate to permanently fix the Medicare physician payment problem to avoid a limited choice of physicians and limited access to care.

The AMA and AARP sent a joint letter (PDF) to Senate and House leadership underscoring the urgency of repealing the current sustainable growth rate formula to avert a 21 percent physician payment cut scheduled to take effect March 1. The event coincides with a joint AMA/AARP television ad campaign urging action on this issue.

With reluctance, I have stopped accepting new Medicare and Tricare patients until this mess is corrected. The politicians don't seem to get it. Health care is not going to get any cheaper, because people are going to continue to live longer and advances in technology are going to cost more. Liberals, moderates, and conservatives are going to have to have an OPEN dialogue with ALL of the American people if we are going to have universal accessible health care for all of our citizens. But it isn't going to come at a cheap price if it is high quality !
