Walgreens to leave Anthem network as of Jan. 1, 2012

Last month, Anthem informed employer clients and members about contract talks between Express Scripts, the company that manages its drug store network, and Walgreens. Despite ongoing discussions, Express Scripts and Walgreens have not reached an agreement and Walgreens will leave the network as of Jan. 1, 2012.

Anthem will send employers a communication regarding this change. Anthem will also communicate to members that have used Walgreens within the last 90 days, asking them to move their prescriptions to another in-network pharmacy before Dec. 31, 2011. They will also encourage members to use the mail order option for their prescription drug benefits for appropriate maintenance medications.
